Dirty Words

My husband was working on the children's ministry area at our church yesterday with our good friend Sunnie, who also happens to be our Children's Minister. Every so often Sunnie regales us with the inside story on our six year old's behavior in children's church.

Here is what she shared with Rich yesterday.

On Sunday, they were talking with the kids about things they might struggle with (ie. lying, rage, dirty words, etc.). They shared in their small groups and then came together with the larger group. Sunnie then said that the small groups were a safe place to share, but if anyone felt comfortable they could share in the larger group as well.

Richie raised his hand.

The conversation went something like this...

Sunnie: What do you struggle with Richie?

Richie: Dirty Words

Sunnie: Really?

Richie: Yeah, the S word

If you know my child you are probably laughing because you know that he is 6.

And he looks like this...

And he hasn't been to Kindergarten yet so you're doubting the "S" word is really THE "S" word.

It's not.

The "S" word he was referring to?

STUPID

Very funny! That is a baaaddd word around here. It is hard to explain why we don't say the words that sometimes Mommy and Daddy say. Or that they hear on Disney movies. Oops.

Ha! Stupid is a word we struggle with around here too. Last night we were struggling with "stinky". We told Ellie that for every time she said it she has to pay us a quarter. In one hour she lost 6 quarters! I'm not sure what we'll do when she's out of money!

Hahahaha! Great creative posts, I love the picture mixed in, it really adds a lot! Luckily we aren't struggling with words yet, but it will be here soon enough!

I really don't like that word, either.

Good for him...admitting to his struggle!

I remember when I was teaching first grade and the first student came to me to say his friend was saying the "F" word. I of course jumped to a logical conclusion. I went to the friend and started the talk about words we say at school and words we don't and asked him to whisper what he said to his friend in my ear.... the "f" word was "fart"

I was so glad that I asked him what he said instead of assuming it was the other "f" word!! :)

I love it -- the innocense of children. I wish it didn't have to change. The "S" word is a bad word at our house as well, along with the "H" word -- hate. I find myself using that word in a sentence like, "I just hate the way that dessert turned out." And my sweet Molly will say, "Mommmmmm - you just said 'hate'. That word is inapproperiate." Makes me smile every time.
