Well, it was inevitable. I knew at some point in my married life that I would end up succumbing to my husband's love of dogs. I just didn't know he would use our sons so deftly in his ploy to accrue one. Let me set the stage for you...
Saturday morning + Petco + One particularly cute dog from a shelter + "Puppy Dog" eyes from all of my boys...especially the BIG one + Mommy looking like a deer caught in headlights = Flawless execution of Petco's brilliant (gotta hand it to them) marketing ploy (CHA CHING) and a new family dog!
I must admit I've spent the last few days in somewhat of a stunned silence at my current reality. I'm still not sure exactly how I got here. I've never been a dog lover. Please don't judge. I had a bad experience as a young child when I was ATTACKED (okay, maybe it wasn't an attack, but it seemed like it to me at the time) by a Doberman Pinscher. And let's just say, the experience did not exactly create in me a sense of ease in regard to the species we call canine.
But I digress. What was the original point of this post? Oh yeah, to introduce you to the dog.
Meet Spot. He's a JackRat (Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix). He is five months old. So far he has a very calm and sweet disposition. The only real issue so far is with house training, but he's learning. And thankfully, the guy that had the biggest puppy dog eyes is working on that while he is on break from being all "professorial".
Almost everyone in the family is completely smitten. And honestly, if he could stop emitting bodily secretions on my carpet for awhile, I might consider coming around. That is, AFTER I call the carpet cleaner. Time will surely tell.
Oh wait...what's that? You want to see some pictures? Alright, alright already...here's Spot in his OFFICIAL BLOGGING DEBUT. Drum roll, please....

Just let me say that I know that this is a huge sacrifice and step out of your comfort zone, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! [on behalf of the boys, of course] Love you, Hon!
Oh my word. He is ADORABLE. I am not a huge pet lover myself, so I think I know how you must be feeling. But just look at how grateful your hubby is! :) I'm thinking that might make it all worth it.
He looks adorable! Congratulations on your newest member of your family. :)
Kindof reminds me of the dog from 'My Dog Skip'.
he is so cute. i would have caved too. actually i did cave and that is how we ended up with a second dog.
enjoy him... he will grow on you ;o)
Sorry about your carpet, but he is a cutie!!! I am not a big dog lover either, being chased ome from the school bus, down a looooonnnngggg country road by a doberman will do that to ya!
Stinkin' doberman's ruin it for a lot of girls I guess!
And, yes, I have a friend/follower widget. It's about alf way down (or less) under the who I am and what I live for widgets. And, for now, under the hair poll!!
Hey, I'm not a dog person. Remember "Thunder" he's long gone, to a lovely farm with lots of land and a family who wanted a really big dog. We are out of the dog business for a while.
I must say "Spot" is super cute. Good luck.
He is adorable!
Okay, my dogs drive me (and the kids) nuts, and I AM a dog lover.
Your new doggie, I must say, looks like he belongs in your family. No wonder Rich and the boys (and yes, you) could not resist those puppy dog eyes!
And as for the breed of your new family member, if I were to ever get another dog, it'd be a Jack Russell or a Rat terrier. Or a mix, like yours. They're good dogs, Alana. A lot of fun, very loyal, good with kids. As time passes, and he gets trained, etc., you will find that you, too, are a dog lover.
Spot is very cute!! I used to feel pretty close the same way toward cats but now our cat and I carry on great conversations!! :)
I knew you'd come around!!! :) So glad that you've added a sweet puppy to your family! I'm sure the boys (all of them) are quite happy with this Christmas addition!! :)
You realize that you just gave them the best Christmas present ever, right? Spot really does look like the perfect dog for your family. Something about those eyes...He sure is a cutie! I can't wait to meet him in person!
On behalf of the entire blogging community....AAWWWWW. He is totally adorable! Hopefully (once he is housebroken) his sweetness will bring you around and help you forget the trauma of your childhood.
I had a traumatic experience with a spider as a child, and I am seriously phobic about them now, so I understand how things like that can color your view as an adult.
Have a Merry Christmas!
Xandra
Oh my gosh! That is one of the most adorable puppies I have ever seen! How fun!
oh my word!
from one non-dog person to another...i can officially say...you are a better woman than i!
but, i can also officially say...that dog is CUTE! so, i see good things on the horizon!
merry christmas friend!
A dog for Christmas - huh? Things are about to get fun. Enjoy that cute little thing. Spot is a great name. :-)
You brave girl. I know my day is coming eventually. So far I've managed to hold my puppy-dog-eyed hubby off for another few months (cross fingers: maybe years). I still keep saying I have too much poop in my life right now to add yet MORE to it! =] Yikes!!
He's a cutie, though. You'll have to let us know if he turns out to be a great kid dog. We are still trying to pick a kid-friendly breed (indoor, preferably) for the inevitable day we get one.
Cute name too! Love it.
Yay - another convert to the Cummings dog-ways. And it only took 12 1/2 years!
I was going to say something sarcastic here in the comment section. That is, until I read Rich's comment.
Sweet girl. You married a sweet man.
Enjoy Spot...he is going to be around for the next 13 plus years!
Oh, Alana! Give Spot a chance. You'll come to love him. And if you don't, chances are he will love YOU the best!
To quote Hannah: "awwwwwww, he's so cute!"
I hope that he proves to be a quick learner, so that you can move on to the "bonding" part of ownership. He looks like he's LOVING his new home...who wouldn't love living in your home :)
He's a cutie - I'm sure it won't be long before I'm put in the same position.
I am not a huge lover of all things with fur in my house, but that is one VERY cute dog. He sounds like a great fit for your family (once the whole being house broken thing gets resolved).
We named our jack russell Spot too.
SolUMel is THE BEST at getting out pet stains from the carpet...it really neutralizes the odor, too. :) Hope Spot is getting better at "learning." :)
Aaaaaaaw... he's adorable!
First, I was attacked by a doberman when I was 18... took a chunk out of my leg and I've never been the same since, so I don't blame you.
Second, we recently acquired a dog... a friend passed away and we took her sweet little chihuahua/jack russel mix into our home. She's precious and a wonderful addition to our family. Hope that you'll enjoy spot as much as we love Patches. :)
Love you!
PS... the word verification down below reads "gotrov" and all I could think of was, "Got Rover?" LMBO
Oh, have mercy!! He is adorable!! No wonder you had to get him!
It'll be like having a very mobile, peeing baby in the house for a while, but then it's all good! :)
sheesh! how on earth can I say anything original, when I'm reduced to babbling baby talk 'cause your doggy is so adowabowl and cutie-wootie and awwwww.
very vute. may you love yours like I love mine (even though I don't love dogs)
I'm not a dog lover either but am in love with my dog whom I had to leave behind---how do you explain that? no lover, in love...oh but they somehow attach to you. Looks like he is a keeper and you made some boys awful happy! Just stopped by to wish you a Happy New Year and tell you that you blessed me beyond measure last year uh-lay-nuh! Deut 11:11---His eye is on all of your 2009 for His Hand is on your precious life. I think the world of you! Lots of Love, Bev
I too succumbed to my husband's love of dogs a few months into our marriage. I really wasn't sure about it, but 8 years later I can't imagine our family without her.
Plus, you got a super-cute one so I'm sure Spot will grown on you in no time.
Rich's comment - oh, how sweet!
I am resisting, but I know a "Spot"-like friend is on its way into our lives in the next couple of years.
how sweet! you're hubby was the first to comment!!
He looks exactly like I pictured him!! He looks like loads of fun and can't to hear all the blog posts I know we'll both have about being puppy trainers/dog owners!!
Congrats on Spot!
